Naked Fudgy Cake Doughnuts


Cake doughnuts are my jam. I love preparing them, eating them, and sharing them with friends.

I had a chance to make these Naked Fudgy Cake Doughnuts the other day for my good friend, Quelcy of With the Grains. She also styled, photographed and taste-tested them.

The secret ingredient to making these doughnuts extra fudgy and delicious is the Naked Casein Protein Powder I add instead of milk or other dairy products. The great thing about this specific casein is it contains all the essential amino acids (oh, hey, mood boosters!), and it is a slow-digesting protein, which helps keep you sustained longer.

If you are dairy-free, you can substitute the butter for coconut oil and the casein for the Naked Pea Protein.

These sweet treats will satisfy your sweet tooth without giving you the major crash that traditional doughnuts will.



Dry Ingredients:

½ cup flour (I use gluten-free cup-for-cup)
½ cup Naked Casein Powder
1/3 cup coconut palm sugar
½ cup raw cacao
½ teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of sea salt

Wet Ingredients:

2/3 cup +3 tablespoons almond milk
6 tablespoons maple syrup
3 tablespoons melted butter (or coconut oil)
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Optional Toppings:

Chocolate chips (to melt and coat the top)
Sprinkles (I used India Tree – naturally dyed)
Nuts and seeds
Peanut butter


  1. Preheat oven to 350˚ F.
  2. In a food processor, combine dry ingredients and pulse a few times, until evenly mixed.
  3. Add in the wet ingredients and pulse until a batter forms.
  4. Scoop the mixture into doughnut tins or silicone mold (here’s my favorite!) and spread evenly, making sure the batter is even with the tin or mold.
  5. Bake 12-14 minutes or until you can stick a toothpick and no cake comes off.
  6. Let cool and add desired toppings.
